2010 Scholarship Recipient
Julie Ann Haldeman has been described as an exceptional, ambitious, and amiable young woman who is an outstanding representative of the priniciples that drive the Abington Community Taskforce.
Julie has served as present of the World Affairs / Model United Nations Club; is a member of the National Honor Society, and is a violinist in the school orchestra. She participates in the youth choir and bell choir at Abington Presbyterian Church.
She is a three-year member of the executive board of the Key Club and currently serves as the club's vice president. She initiated the Key's Club's "Pinwheels for Peace" project. "Go Back, Give Back," a monthly teacher assistance program at elementary schools, a reusable water bottle fundraiser to promote recycling. She has also organized the annual aspaeresis blood drive. The University of Rochester presented her with the Frederick Douglas and Susan B. Anthony Award in 2009 for her outstanding commitment to social justice. She was also the 2009 recipient of the "I Dare You!" Award given by the American Youth Foundation to honor character and leadership.
Julie earned the prestigious Congressional Award Gold Medal in 2009. She volunteers weekly at he Abington Free Library, leads weekly computer classes for the elderly at St. Joseph's Manor in Huntingdon Valley, and is a volunteer science presenter at the Franklin Institute.
During her summers off from school, Julie has traveled to Germany for the "Children's International Summer Villiages," Columbia University in New York for their "Engineering Design via Community Service," Japan for the "Youth for Understanding," and Arles, France for the Rassias Summer Language Program. She attended a summit in Washington, D.C. for the "Presidential Classroom: Future World Leaders."
There is no doubt that Julie Ann is an extraordinary young woman who will make a difference in the world.
